I don't know who the adviser on Russian was but "Batya" does not mean daddy - it's an archaic word for father. And "Paxan" is a low class and/or criminal word for father as well (there was quite a lot of emphasis on them being aristocrats of the criminal world - a kindly clock maker trying to gloss over him being a mafiosi would not ask his American daughter to call him paxan). "Milaya" does not mean sweet. "Idealnaya" literally means ideal. A whole bunch of other sentences and words they use are very inaccurately translated. I get that this is not a serious publication with accurate research references and such but for an otherwise engaging book i found these details quite annoying and had to concentrate on ignoring them. I haven't read anything by KC in a very long time, but I remembered her as great at PNR and gave this a try. This book is nothing more than a well-written retread of the ever popular beauty and the beast, where the beast is a Russian Mafiya enforcer, and the beauty is a corn-fed 24 year old virgin from the heartland of America. Minus one for lack of originality in plotting. On the plus side, I liked the snarky dialogue between Natalie and Jess - their back and forth prevented us from having to read angsty inner monologues about loving emotionally unavailable men. It also allowed the reader to possibly believe that a 24 year old virgin might jump into a BDSM relationship with almost no second thoughts. The sexual chemistry between the H and h was well done (and is actually what compelled me to buy book 2).On the minus side, all the bad guys were really just good guys that had to be bad for selfless reasons - her father was protecting other business people, Sebastyn was protecting his brothers - and then everything got out of hand so they were committed to a life of crime. I suppose that was to allow the reader to believe that an ordinary girl with an ordinary past could fall in love with a murdering criminal and not think twice about it. And that she could move to Russia to be with her murdering criminal dad with hardly any real conflict. Who could take that seriously? Unapologetic bad guys always make for better reading, so this was a giant miss for me.If you read a lot of Mafiya books, this brings nothing new to the table, and is a lot more expensive than most reads in this genre. But if you want book where the H/h romance sizzles off the page, this is worth the read.
