I love David's work. I never expected to get so hooked on this series (or any of his series, and I've read all but the Salem series) but the rich storylines and characters always leave me wanting more. What you DON'T know about this penultimate book is that it comes with three "short" stories at the end, similar to his book of short stories which give you important detailed background relevant to the story. While not a fan of short stories, all of his are good and many are 30-60+ min reads. Was delighted by this bonus at the end!To be judicious, there were times at the start of this book that we're harder to get into and the story was spread out between all the characters enough to make it feel like I wasn't getting STORY but more of a set-up. This dissipates to some very good action which, yes, requires the previous set up. So, if you find yourself a bit distracted just keep going and it will all work out.All in all a very good read! Though I think the final short story about The Maimed Prince was by far my favorite part... Hands down, best of The Fatemarked Epic series so far!! Estes has surpassed himself with his mad talent of giving us characters we care deeply about. And the world he's created is so complex with so many different storylines, although they all seem to crash together at some point.... Just magnificent! He kind of blows my socks off!Annise and Tarin head north to rescue Lady Zelda (love her). Lisbeth heads south with the Sleeping Knights army along with a surprising companion. Rhea makes some soul-changing decisions and surprisingly, becomes one of my favorites (I've had a love/hate relationship with her throughout this entire series). King Gareth becomes the King he needs to be and I love him for it. And Raven meets an unexpected ally and I can't get enough of this new duo! We also have Roan, Grey and Jai and we can't forget another favorite... Gwen! Oh my! So many characters and so many amazing storylines.And did I mention dragons? I have never loved dragons more than in this story!But... David does throw in some heartbreak as well. Of course! I'm not sure I've ever read any of his books without tears. Some happy tears, some very sad tears! He always seems to give me an emotional rollercoaster of feels. Deathmarked is no exception. That ending!!I was truly blown away at the depth of this remarkable epic fantasy. If you like fantasy, you will love this entire Fatemarked series. I'm on pins and needles waiting for the final book, Lifemarked!
