Of the first four novels in the series, BATTLEGROUND (Book 4) was my second favorite. SEMPER FI (Book 1) was my overall favorite.As with his other books in “The Corps” series, historical facts, events, places, and individuals are masterfully woven into a fascinating fictional story. BATTLEGROUND’S primary story line is the preparation and invasion of Guadalcanal. There is also a story line on the Coastwatchers.If you decide to start reading the series, be prepared to binge read all 10 books. I took a break from the series and read another book. When I returned back to the series, I had to stop, think, and remember some of the characters since there are so many and they appear, disappear, and reappear throughout the series. This chapter of the Marine Corps during WWII is both one of my favorites for character development and one of the most difficult to read because Mr. Griffin expresses the mood, attitude and circumstances so eloquently. Battleground fills in some of the spaces left open in Counter Attack, and fits into the same time frame, with most of the action concentrated on the development and activity in Special Detachment 14, WaterLily Cottage, the battle of Guadalcanal and the need to capture & control Rabaul. Andrew Foster makes a telling cameo appearance as Charles Galloway and his lady arrive in San Francisco, enroute to his new command VMF229a & and we get to know his daughter, Patricia Pickering, a little better as she takes on Sec. Knox. Although it doesn't take a rocket scientist to conclude that eventually all the parts of the story- Pickering & Banning/ Jack NMI Steckler & McCoy/Pick & Richard- will eventually converge for one big " family" reunion; getting there is a lot of the fun and a great read. We can't do without out villians- or in this chapter's case a villianess. Her come-uppance will wait until the next book but we know its coming; always leave them with a problem [ Kofler & Howard are still on the island & David is seriously hurt ] and a cliff-hanger: I am grateful it wasn't Flem or Charlie!
